Boosting website traffic via content curation and social media promotion

social media connectionsLast week we showed how BuzzTalk’s publishing interface selects the best articles for curating content. This week’s  blog post is about what to do next. Every time you have written your own article or selected a third party article that you think is valuable for your target audience, you need to promote this via social media such as Twitter. It helps to propagate your news article or blog post to a large number of readers within a short time.

Publishers now have social media accounts, such as Twitter, to take advantage of the enormous reach social media provides. Also activists and politicians are increasingly using social media to affect public opinion.

However, about 400 million tweets are written every day and it just keeps on growing.  Also tweets are very time sensitive by nature as they quickly sink down in the timeline. In order to get noticed and retweeted you need to follow some best practices.

What’s a successful tweet?

A successful tweet is a tweet that gets noticed, read or even pondered upon and retweeted. It’s reach grows beyond the reach of the original tweeter and as a consequence it's life span is prolonged. The tweet has become viral.

10 Tips for getting retweeted

  1. Tweet about current events as nearly 80% of retweeted content is about news.
  2. Repeat your best tweets but reword them and mix them up with other tweets.
  3. Use the 10:4:1 rule for your tweets. Use the special Twitter injection function within BuzzTalk to enter your own messages and links to your website of blog.
  4. Get more relevant followers by starting to follow them (you can do this from BuzzTalk). The more followers you have the higher the chance your tweet gets noticed.
  5. Use #hashtags. People that aren't following you on Twitter may search for specific hashtags and run into your tweet. This will get you and your tweet noticed and it may lead to more followers as well.
  6. Direct speak to people using @mentions. Tip: find influencers in your field using BuzzTalk.
  7. Retweet in order to be retweeted. If you retweet someone else your Twitter username will get noticed by that person. They may retweet you as a way of saying thanks.
  8. Leave room for others to add a comment when retweeting. It's best to use 120 characters for your tweet so always use a URL shortener service such as bit.ly or goo.gl.
  9. Just ask! Yes, it works. Just say "please retweet" or "please RT" and you'll increase your chances of getting retweeted. Just use it sparingly.
  10. Make it easy for people to share your content by including social media sharing buttons on your site. You'll see a few of them at the top of this article.
